Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment system used by cosmetic dentists like Dr. Michelle Bartolome and William Swearingen in Citrus Heights, California to straighten teeth through the use of clear plastic trays called aligners. The virtually invisible aligners eliminate the metallic smile that is characteristic of the old-fashioned, traditional braces. Invisalign invisible aligners are custom-molded to fit your teeth.
Invisalign® aligners, over time, reposition your teeth into the straighter, more attractive smile you've always wanted. The ease and convenience of Invisalign have made it the choice for over 500,000 people in the last few years. One of the most appealing aspects of Invisalign® aligners is that there are no metal wires or bands constantly irritating your teeth and gums. Their popularity may also be attributed to the fact that most people won't even notice your aligners, and they won't interrupt your busy lifestyle.
After you consult with our doctors and decide that Invisalign® is the best option for you, they will create your aligners. After taking impressions of your mouth, they will use the Invisalign® computer system to create a series of clear, very durable aligners. The first one will begin to exert very gentle pressure on your teeth. Each successive tray will continue that gentle pressure to move your teeth to their target position.
The number of aligners will depend on your individual needs, but the average number is between 18 and 30. Each one is worn for two weeks, 24 hours a day (except during meals and when teeth are being brushed and flossed). This is about 22 hours per day. This is rarely a problem for most patients. (Remember traditional braces are worn 24 hours per day). Then the next aligner is used. The complete Invisalign teeth repositioning process often takes even less time than traditional orthodontics because the computerized trays allow more precise control of the tooth movement.
Advantages and Disadvantages
The advantages of the Invisalign® system are numerous. Many people would rather live with crooked teeth than entertain the thought of living with silver, painful braces for two years or more. The clear aligners were created to introduce much-needed aesthetics to the field of orthodontics. This system also allows its wearers to brush and floss as they normally would, reducing the chances of staining and decay that often occur with traditional braces. Food and drink limitations are not necessary. When patients wish to eat or drink foods they simply remove their aligners.
The disadvantages of the Invisalign® system are practically non-existent. Naturally, patients who do not wear the aligners as directed will not see the results they desired. This is very rare. Most patients are very motivated to succeed. Also, occasionally a patient with sensitive teeth and/or gums may feel some slight discomfort when they switch to a new aligner. This is short-lived and quickly goes away. These problems are certainly minor and rare, and all patients say the benefits far outweigh any problems.
The cost of Invisalign® is competitive with traditional braces. Your dental insurance may cover the treatment, but you should ask your insurance company directly what they cover regarding dental/orthodontic procedures before committing to anything.
